South Wagga Apex member Mathew Longmore said there were more than 200 entrants casting a line in the Wollundry Lagoon this year.
Mr Longmore said the surprise catch of the day was "the biggest gold fish" they had ever seen.
In other news:
"It is pretty special. We have never caught one like this before and it's about half a kilo," he said.
More than 50 fish took the bait on Sunday morning.
Although fish numbers were low, he said families still had plenty of fun with many children running around and having a good time.
