The crash left another man in the vehicle with serious injuries.
The 44-year-old driver remains in a serious condition in Tamworth Hospital being treated for multiple fractures, while his passenger, a 49-year-old man, died at the scene near Manilla.
The pair were competing in the Riverina Redneck Rally and were en route from Warialda to Nundle on Thursday afternoon after almost a week of travelling across NSW.
Since 2017, the charity event has raised over $1 million for Country Hope, which helps local children with cancer and life-threatening illnesses.
The rally brings in participants from across the country who travel the state together over several days, racking up an ever-increasing fundraising tally in the process.
This year's event alone has raised over $450,000, with about 90 cars participating alongside support crews.
The six-day rally left West Wyalong on March 1 and was due to finish in Nelson Bay yesterday.
The accident happened just after 1pm on Thursday on Banoon Road at Borah Creek, located about 80 kilometres north west of Tamworth.
Emergency services rushed to the site of the crash but the passenger died at the scene. Paramedics assessed the 44-year-old driver for multiple injuries and he was taken to Tamworth hospital, where he remains.
The crash occurred on a dirt road, but it was not raining at the time.
Crash investigators spent much of Thursday night at the scene examining the roadway around the crash and the wreckage. Investigations are continuing and a report is currently being prepared for the coroner.
Fifty-eight people have lost their lives on NSW roads so far this year.
