It comes after the merger of two Bourke Street school zones forming one continuous 40 kilometre an hour stretch from Red Hill Road to Fernleigh Road.
Able Driving School instructor Glen Gaudron said his problem was not with the merger itself - which he entirely supports - but rather where the school zone starts near Red Hill Road.
The school zone on Bourke Street begins north of Red Hill Road because of potential students walking to and from Red Hill Primary School, which is one block away in Hawkes Place.
However, Mr Gaudron said it was uncommon to find students in this section of the school zone and it is unnecessary for cars to slow down if it is not used for the intended purpose.
He said the lack of students using the pedestrian crossing in this section causes confusion for drivers, who either ignore the 40 kilometre an hour speed limit or just do not realise they are driving through a school zone.
"[Red Hill Public School] is not even on that road and every school zone that I know of is on the road that is next to the school," he said.
"I have not seen any kids on the road ever since they removed the lollipop lady on that pedestrian crossing."
Mr Gaudron said the start of the school zone would be better placed closer to the Mount Austin High School, where there is a higher presence of students.
Transport for NSW south west director Lindsay Tanner said the department was committed to improving road safety, particularly for children who are some of the most vulnerable road users.
In other news:
He said the previous gap between school zones on Bourke Street caused confusion for drivers, which was a concern raised by Wagga council.
"The new zone provides a more consistent, safer experience for motorists as they travel along Bourke Street, while adding only 12 seconds to journeys," he said.
Transport for NSW could not provide information on the frequency of pedestrians using the school zone near Red Hill Primary School.
