Robina Davidson had been at the hospital to visit her daughter-in-law and newborn grandson and decided to take her two-year-old granddaughter to the cafe for something to eat.
Mrs Davidson said that when the little girl saw the array of snacks on offer, she instead asked for a plain butter sandwich.
The cafe staff made the sandwich, but then told Mrs Davidson it would cost $7, a price she described as "highway robbery".
"I was gobsmacked. I just paid the money. I didn't cause a scene. I had my granddaughter with me as well," Mrs Davidson said.
"I reckon by the expression on my face they should have known what I was thinking."
After being contacted by The Daily Advertiser, Wagga Base Hospital issued a statement about the pricey snack.
"The cafe at Wagga Base Hospital is independently run, however, hospital management liaise with the cafe to discuss issues that impact their customers," the statement reads.
"In this instance, the cafe has advised that the price should have been $2 and the customer was incorrectly charged.
"The cafe apologises for the error. If the customer is happy to provide their contact details they will be offered a refund as well as free meal from the cafe."
Mrs Davidson said she was less interested in getting a refund than in ensuring this incident was a one-off mistake.
"I was worried about people who are visiting in the hospital for a long time because they've got family there and whether this could happen to them," she said.
"I just hope it doesn't happen to someone else."
