Dragon Boat Club member Denise Ma, whose grandson Albert Shumack attends the child care centre, explained new year rituals, including tidying the house and telling family members that you love them.
The pupils then took part in a procession with the dragon and had a Chinese lunch.
Town and Country licencee Rowena Brown said the Chinese New Year activities were part of the centre's multicultural program.
"When we have a child with a different cultural background, we like to teach the whole group about their culture," she said.
"When we had a girl from France here we had a Bastille Day activity."
The first day of the Chinese New Year will be on Saturday, marking the Year of the Rat.
The boat club will also hold a Lunar New Year dinner on Friday night to support bushfire recovery efforts.
