In honour of his retiring father Allan, Quentin Hull took the microphone for a race at Wagga on Tuesday. Allan will call his final meeting at the MTC on Sunday.

Quentin, an experienced international sports broadcaster with ABC, successfully called Ritmico to victory in the Sportsbar Plus Benchmark 66 Handicap (1800m).

In an all-Goulburn finish, Ritmico ($11) edged out Defy ($3.60) by a half head. There was just a neck to Fleeting Stryke ($26) back in third.

Quentin enjoyed the experience despite the nerves.

"To do something for the first time, in a long time, you forget how nervous you are. I was actually really nervous, just knowing you're applying a certain skill set but in a different way," Quentin said.

"I've seen Dad do it a 1000 times and I've whispered it under my voice watching it on the telly, I've done lots of that type of stuff, but until you're in that moment and knowing what it's actually like calling through Dad's binoculars, it wasn't easy."

Quentin was pleased to be on the right end of the photo finish.

"We had a change of lead after it appeared they'd settled, then there was six of them across the track," he said.

"The angle here at Wagga is always pretty tough but it's nice to get it right in a close one no matter what you're doing."

Allan was very proud of Quentin's call, a special moment.

"I was more nervous than he was," Allan said.
