The 19-year-old replaces Liam Dedini, who took up a role with the Sydney-based Football NSW Institute after three years in Wagga.
Yeates, who played in Wagga City Wanderers' under-20 NPL Canberra division one premiership last year, hopes to continue the groundwork put in place by Dedini in the part-time role.
"I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be difficult, but it's going to be fun," he said.
"I don't want to make big decisions (straight away), but I want to continue what Liam set in place.
"When he started there was probably 60 kids in the SAP (Skill Acquisition Phase) program, and now there's over 200 or so.
"It's definitely working and along the line there'll be things I want to implement."
Yeates said the move to Capital Football last year has already reaped dividends, with the under-20 and under-18s winning premierships and a handful of junior teams making finals.
"We always knew the talent was here and the move to Canberra was a good move for us," he said.
"We've got a lot of good juniors, it's moving in the right direction and it's the perfect time to be involved.
"I've been a coach with the Wanderers (under-13 boys) for a while now and the younger kids probably relate to younger coaches a bit better. It does help and give you an advantage.
School development programs, the development of club coaches and overseeing elite junior football programs will be some of the major aspects of Yeates' role.
"There's going to schools, organising tournaments and programs, whether it be school associations or associations coming to Wagga for the weekend," he said.
"I'll be working with local clubs and improving the juniors there, managing the Football Wagga Academy and SAP programs, and helping out with Wagga City Wanderers where I can."
Yeates' appointment is one of a few changes at Football Wagga, with Rachael Barrell appointed treasurer and Deonie Burns media and marketing manager.
It is the first time since 2016 Football Wagga has had a full complement of six board directors.
