The third race at Rosehill has been named the Lou Cox Handicap (1100m).

Australian Turf Club will host it's second annual Bookmakers Recognition Day with Cox one of four bookies to be honoured on the day.

Cox retired from bookmaking last May after 47 years on the stand and will be trackside on Saturday for the race named after him.

"Quite honoured I am, to be recognised like that," Cox said.

A brunch will be held before Saturday's raceday to celebrate the occasion.

Cox worked his final meeting at last year's Wagga Gold Cup and admits he misses bookmaking.

"I do miss it," he said.

"I'm 82 now, nearly 83, and it was getting a bit too much for me. I was primarily doing Sydney and Melbourne races and they're long days."

Cox began bookmaking in 1972 and worked at '43 or 44' different tracks across the state.

"I always liked the Wagga Cup," he said.

"And the Melbourne Cup meeting at Wagga."

Cox acknowledges the bookmaking landscape has changed and says 'you can't stop change'.

"The biggest thing is when I first started bookmaking, there was no other avenues to have a bet," he said.

"There was no TAB, no lotto, no scratchies so we had first bit of the cherry."

Cox was made a life member of Murrumbidgee Turf Club last year.
