Wagga City Library's manager of library services Claire Campbell said regular knitters and first-time knitters came to the library on Thursday to create snug, secure kangaroo pouches for joeys impacted by the devastating bushfires.

"[Thursday was] a special knitting event we are actually working with WIRES to make kangaroo pouches for those joeys who have been injured or who have lost their mums,' she said.

"So everyone is madly knitting to make nice warm pouches."

Ms Campbell said it is great to see so many people pick up their knitting needles for a good cause.

She said the pouches will be sent to WIRES for distribution.

"They could be going anywhere ... because of the bushfires there is a need and people really want to help and this is a great way for them to do that," she said.

"We are happy to help get people knitting and it is a great activity for people to do especially in summer to pop into the library where it is nice and cool."

The knitting group will meet again at the Wagga City Library on the next two Tuesdays from 10am to noon.
