The Saints were one of the last clubs to lock in a coach for next season but will be one of the first to begin pre-season and plan to hit the ground running.

Winter is excited ahead of his first campaign in charge.

"I'm pretty keen, it should be pretty good," Winter said.

"I'm a bit nervous but excited at the same time."

The Saints have been boosted by the return of former coach Steve Barnes.

He plans on making a comeback on-field, and will also offer guidance to Winter in his first season as coach.

"He'll play and also be a mentor as well, which will be good for us," he said.

"He's very fit and at the moment and feeling good, so that will be good."

Barnes, an experienced midfielder, has not played for a few years but recently returned from time in Western Australia.

He last played with North Wagga in 2012 when he coached the Saints.

Rhyce Doneley will return after a year off, while the addition of Drew Mitchell will add some depth.

Winter hopes to get plenty of numbers along to the the first training run.

"Pre-season we normally get about 50 there so anywhere between 40 and 50 would be good," he said.

"We've got good 17s so there should be plenty of numbers."

Meantime, Coleambally will also get their pre-season training underway on Tuesday night.

The Blues held a light run and golf day before Christmas but will officially get their campaign underway this week.

New co-coach Curtis Steele is happy with how things are coming together for his first season in charge alongside Luke Hillier.

"We're shaping up pretty well," Steele said.

"We've picked up a few and are still talking to a few more so for now things are looking pretty good."

Two-time Jim Quinn Medallist Guy Orton has been the big pick up for Coleambally, who also hope to announce at least two more signings in coming weeks.

The only loss so far is Graham O'Connell to Lockhart, however there is some doubt surrounding the availability of full-forward Dwayne Weetra.

Weetra made a big impact in his first season at Coleambally, kicking 34 goals in 15 games.

However a move to Mildura may rule him out for a second season.

"Dwayne's got a job in Mildura so he's a bit up in the air at the moment," Steele said.

Steele is looking forward to leading his first pre-season as co-coach.

"It should be good," he said.

"I'm looking forward to getting there and meeting a few new faces. I can't wait."

In other Farrer League news, Temora and Barellan kicked off pre-season training last week.

East Wagga-Kooringal and Marrar will get their campaigns underway next week.

Northern Jets remain the only Farrer League club yet to appoint a coach for the new season.
