Riverina Highlands RFS has now described the bushfires, which merged in a 600,000 hectare blaze late last week with a fire front covering 760 kilometers, as a 'campaign fire'.
"These fires are still not under control, and are not likely to be contained for some weeks due to their size," the RFS stated in a community newsletter.
"We are starting to see an easing in conditions and an opportunity to continue with our containment strategies. How long this will last is not known at this stage."
Firefighters will start back burning ahead of the fire front to reduce fuel loads over the next few days.
Residents have also been warned that they could still be asked to leave their homes and properties if fire conditions worsen in the future.
"Fire behaviour [on Sunday] has eased and crews are all over consolidating control lines, blacking out and ensuring our days of significant fire runs are halted," the RFS stated.
