A man has died after going to find water while helping a friend defend their property as the Dunns Road bushfire rolled through Batlow on Saturday night.

The 47-year-old man was assisting a friend fight fires at a rural property on Batlow Road when he went to a nearby ute to get some water around 6.30pm, police said.
He didn't return, and when the friend went searching for him, the man was found unconscious in the vehicle.
The friend then drove the car a short distance and came across a passing police vehicle.
Officers stopped to help and despite efforts by emergency services, the man died at the scene.
It is understood the man was from Goulburn.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
