Craig Field will be a welcome addition to the Wagga club's forward pack for 2020.
Field, who hails from Dubbo, went through the Parramatta Eels feeder system, played Ron Massey Cup with Wentworthville and comes to Kangaroos following a season in Group Six with Oakdale.
Ashcroft is thrilled to have the 23-year-old on board.
"In terms of where we are headed and what we are wanting to do he's a perfect fit," Ashcroft said of the versatile forward.
After losing Dana Ratu to crosstown rivals Southcity, and with Warren Lloyd returning to Leeton, Kangaroos have lost some forward power during the off-season.
However Ashcroft hopes Field can bring some higher level experience to what shapes to be young forward pack.
He's expected to join Saul Houma in the front row.
"He'll probably find himself in the front row in a side like ours," Ashcroft said.
"We're a bit younger but a forward in general is something we definitely needed after losing Dana.
"Especially for me as a younger guy, with a heap of young boys around us, so to have another bloke who has come from playing footy in the city makes me feel a little more comfortable as well.
"He'll definitely be someone who can give me a hand."
Kangaroos finished sixth last season with seven wins, a draw and 10 losses from their 18 games.
However they were seven points, and percentage, outside of a finals berth.
They struggled for consistency but showed they could match it with the top teams after downing Gundagai midway through the season.
After the loss of star hooker Glenn Dumbrell, Ashcroft is still looking for a playmaker as he prepares for his full-time return to Group Nine to take on the coaching role.
"A halfback is hard to find but if we could get one of them," he said.
"We have a few juniors who can fill that void but someone with a little more experience would be handy to have."
The Wagga club has been training for the last month and have their final session on Thursday night before returning in the new year.
