An early morning discovery has evoked mixed feeling from Griffith Uniting Church members, after finding their office air-conditioning unit wrenched from the window.

Clerical assistant Julie Norris said seeing the the bin tipped over, the brackets bent and the window wide open was a "bit of a shock".

"I feel sorry for them, I really do, but this is definitely disheartening," Ms Norris said.

Church elder Margaret Haggarty was thankful that those responsible didn't venture further into the office through the window and destroy more things.

"This makes it the second time someone has stolen our aircon," Mrs Haggarty explained.

"The last time, it cost us $650 to replace, so it's not cheap."

With appeals like the Target giving tree in action providing food for those in need over the Christmas season, she hopes the aircon has gone to a family who may "need it more than us".

Church member Mary Tapenisi Pe Mavae sent out prayers to those responsible, and urged the community to show compassion.

"To be angry or sad or to show understanding and compassion?" she wrote.

"With this heat I'm hoping that whoever took the aircon, was very desperate and needed it more than the church.
