Wyangle ($3.10) broke through for his first victory since September last year when proving too good in the $27,000 Reece Group Wagga Wagga Ted Ryder Cup Prelude (1600m) at Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
Wyangle, ridden by Mathew Cahill, sat midfield off a strong tempo and powered past $2.15 favourite Supreme Polarity in the straight to score by 1.5 lengths.
Widdison said with all going well, Wyangle will push on to the $35,000 Ted Ryder Cup at Wagga on Christmas Eve.
"It could be a nice Christmas present," Widdison said.
"If he pulls up well I can't see why not. It seems the logical next step.
"A couple of weeks should suit. He'll take a bit of improvement again out of that and I don't see why he wouldn't be pretty competitive in a Ted Ryder."
Supreme Polarity battled on gallantly for second place, with the Norm Gardner-trained Upper House ($6.00) running on for third.
Wagga mare Lady Mironton was a scratching and is likely to head straight into the Ted Ryder Cup on December 24.
Widdison was pleased to see Wyangle back in the winner's stall after going 12 runs without a win.
He had rarely run a bad race during that time but his last win was in a Class Three Handicap on Cootamundra Cup day in 2018.
"He's had no luck all prep," Widdison said.
"He was given a great ride, positive, and rode him like the best horse in the race and was never going to get boxed in.
"He got the job done nice."
It was the first leg of a winning double for Widdison at Wagga.
It's Christmas ($7.00) scored a first-up win in the Royans Wagga Maiden Handicap (1200m).
It was Widdison's first winner for owner Ron Finemore, formerly of Wagga, and he credited the addition of blinkers for helping the five-year-old mare breakthrough.
Meantime, Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland enjoyed a winning double on his home track on Tuesday.
The fairytale comeback story of Azaryah ($5.00) continued when leading all the way in the Crichton Cup Benchmark 66 Handicap (1800m).
It was her third straight victory since joining the Sutherland stable, coming off almost two years off with a tendon injury.
Sutherland was also successful with Hardachak ($41.00) in the Wagga Wagga Early Years Learning Centre Class One Handicap (1600m).
