The previous two New Years Eve events, called Wagga Skyworks, were held at Lake Albert.

Those celebrations followed four years of Committee 4 Wagga running an event in the Victory Memorial Gardens.

This year, the $50,000 previously set aside as the council's annual sponsorship for a private operator to run the event will become the entire budget for a scaled down version back in the gardens.

The Groove Factory will headline the night's entertainment, with rising star Nathan Lamont leading vocals and guitar.

Band member Dale Allison said it was good to be back for another year.

"The Grove Factory have been involved with Wagga's New Year's Eve celebrations since the start in 2013, so this is the seventh year for us and we're very happy to be involved again," Mr Allison said.

The guitarist said the event had taken on a "real community focus", which he said was a contributing factor to the positive response from their audiences.

"When we tested it out in 2013 it was unknown what the response would be but the community have really got behind it and I think it's great to be having it back in the gardens this year with beautiful surrounds," he said.

The event will have a range of entertainment on the stage throughout the evening, as well as a variety of food stands and catering options to choose from.

Mr Alison couldn't give a sneak peak into the lineup they had prepared, but did give The Daily Advertiser subscribers a snippet of one of their hit songs.

"It's a big surprise to me even and everyone yet, we're working on our songs and music material in the background at the moment," he said.

"We'll start out with some light entertainment from some of the schools around and young talent, then The Groove Factory will take the stage with our fantastic voice Nathan Lamont.

"There might even be some surprise guests."

To the community's relief, fireworks are still on the cards despite the change of hands for the event, with the council stating they were scheduled for 9.15pm.

Visitor economy and events coordinator Fiona Hamilton said the council was "always happy to put on free community events".

"We're looking forward to great family event, which will be held in the Victory Memorial Gardens from 5pm to 9.30pm," Ms Hamilton said.

"We hope by creating a free family event that people will come down and take the opportunity to relax and connect with each other, so we think it will be received well."
