The 70-year-old had parked her car underneath the Wagga Marketplace about 7am and was headed for the shops when the ordeal unfolded.
According to police, the woman was walking towards one of the shopping centre's escalators when a car pulled up alongside her.
A man, who was allegedly armed with a knife, got out of the vehicle and demanded the woman hand over her wallet - which had her phone in it - before knocking it out of her hand.
The man picked up the phone and got back in the vehicle, which is believed to have had two other occupants, before fleeing.
The offender was last seen wearing dark clothing with a bandana over his face, but was not further described.
No description of the vehicle was provided by police.
The woman was shaken but uninjured.
A NSW Police spokesperson said the woman drove herself to Wagga police station to report the incident and an investigation was now under way.
Investigators have appealed for anyone who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour in the car park on Saturday morning, or who may have CCTV or dashcam vision, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The weekend's incident came just nine days after a 92-year-old woman was carjacked in the Marketplace car park on November 28.
In that incident, the woman was left shaken but not physically injured.
