The Kooringal man is charged with armed robbery and attempted armed robbery. He did not enter pleas when he appeared in Wagga Local Court on Friday.
He is accused of demanding cash and cigarettes from the attendant, who refused and called police.
The worker had locked the door to deny him access inside. He told police that when he opened a security window, Mr Deng allegedly tried to put his hand, holding the knife, through the window.
Mr Deng, according to police, allegedly then approached another man at the service station and used the knife to threaten and demanded cigarettes.
An officer attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attended and allegedly witnessed Mr Deng attempting to conceal the knife.
Mr Deng was placed under arrest and was taken to Wagga Police Station, where he was charged and refused bail.
Acting Inspector Maggie Deall said: "No injuries were sustained by any party in the incident."
In court on Friday, Mr Deng made a brief appearance via videolink where bail was not applied for and formally refused.
Police prosecutors will serve evidence on the Legal Aid Commission before Mr Deng is set to re-appear in court on February 5.
