Griffith District Cricket Association (GDCA) had agreed to participate in the new format and had paid the fee to become apart of the competition which at the time was being pinned as a round-robin competition.
The change in format led to only five teams taking part with Griffith set to travel to Albury to take on Cricket Albury-Wodonga, with the winner playing Wagga in Wagga.
GDCA president Brenton Harrison was left frustrated with the lack of communication coming from the organisers.
"I only found out about the fixtures through a screenshot of a newspaper article," he said.
"The communication has been poor. We knew in mid-October that the format was changing and we agreed to play in the round-robin and were told there would be eight or so teams involved.
"They said the change in format had been in the works for a number of years and the forfeits last year were the straw that broke the camel's back, but you don't need a university degree to see that it (the new format) isn't going to work.
"Some of the excuses they were using to justify the change for me were very poor."
There had been work in the background to try and garner interest in moving back to a challenge format, and despite getting five positive responses in the space of two days, those efforts were shut down by organisers.
Harrison said it was a disappointing step to have to take.
"I am probably the first Griffith president to pull out of O'Farrell," he said.
"To only have three associations playing it just isn't the cup.
"It is disappointing to see the O'Farrell Cup falling by the wayside and for our life members to see this happen, but this new format isn't going to work."
Griffith will now turn their focus to the Creet Cup challenge against Lake Cargelligo on December 1, and Harrison also didn't rule out challenging for the Hedditch Cup currently held by Leeton.
