Forest Hill Rural Fire Service responded to emergency calls at about 9.20pm and extinguished the car that caught alight on the Sturt Highway at Gumly, Gumly.
"Thankfully the occupant managed to pull off the road and escape without injury," the RFS said online.
The organisation said the smoke from the fire was the likely cause of a temporary power outage in the Forest Hill area as the fire was in close proximity to power lines which arced out.
"Thank you for everyone's patience whilst the highway was closed to allow us to work safely," the RFS said.
"Thanks also to Riverina Police District for their prompt response and assistance."
