Since the first 16 teams of 'gumis' floated down the river in March 1976, the annual race has become a picture of the city's folklore.
But, unfortunately, due to lack of rain, organisers have made the tough decision to pull the plug on the 2020 event.
Although homemade rafts will not be pushing off from the shores to win the title, more than 2000 rubber ducks will sail in their place.
Joshua Paul, a committee member of South Wagga Apex, said lack of rain wouldn't dissuade them.
"Unfortunately, early this year, a week out from the 2019 World Championship Gumi Race our members were forced to cancel the Gumi Race due to low water levels in the Murrumbidgee River and safety concerns for participants and spectators," he said.
"South Wagga Apex have come together and made the difficult decision that, again due to the drought, our region is currently experiencing a grim outlook of rainfall in the future.
"So it is only right that we cancel the preparation and organisation of the 2020 World Championship Gumi Race."
Mr Paul said this had been a tough decision for members to make, as they are incredibly proud of Gumi.
However, the club refused to let adversity stop them from giving the community an event to be proud of, and that will "bring people together and show the resilience of our region".
"We will be hosting The Mighty Murrumbidgee River Duck Race at the Wagga Beach," Mr Paul said.
"We will be selling 2500 duck tickets ... we will be racing them down the river for the chance to win in $3000 of cash prizes.
"Each duck will have a number that corresponds to your raffle ticket."
Mr Paul said Wagga has a talent for taking an idea and making it bigger and better, a talent they have applied to the duck race.
"It's going to be incredible to see 2500 little, rubber, duckies going down the river," he said.
With food stalls, live music, markets and produce stalls, amusements for the kids and plenty of activities for all ages.
