WILLANS Hill School children packed into the Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre on Monday to watch their charity steer raise thousands of dollars to help them purchase a new bus.

The project, supported by Wagga RSL, has been longstanding in Wagga and has become a fond tradition among members of the community.
When the Murray Grey steer walked into the selling ring Landmark auctioneer, Peter Cabot was quickly met with a flurry of bids amounting $12,000. The charity bid lodged through Aristocrat meant the steer was donated back to the open market.
Again the steer, weighing 555 kilograms, was met with strong competition. Ultimately he was knocked down for 335c/kg to amass $1859.25 after being secured by Teys.

Children and supporters of the charity auction let out a cheer and showed their appreciation of the result.
Breeders of the steer, Ted and Georgette Keen of Nawarra Murray Grey Stud, were on hand to watch the sale. And John Rodd, who prepared the steer for sale, watched the auction with his daughter Kimberley.
For Mr Rodd this was the 14th steer he had prepared with the support of the Wagga RSL. But there have been many others go under the hammer for various charities throughout the years.
Wagga RSL president Peter Thomas said he was pleased with the result and it would be great to see the children from Willans Hill School enjoying their new bus.
He said the project certainly gained a lot of attention and support from members of the local community.
Mr Thomas said it was good to see so many people come together for such a worthwhile cause.
