A police spokeswoman said that about 6.45pm on Tuesday the man was hit and suffered fatal injuries.
"During the course of the extensive clean-up [of the crash], the man was hit in the head," she said.
The spokeswoman said Riverina Police District and SafeWork NSW have started investigations into the incident.
"Riverina police detectives will prepare a report for the coroner," she said.
"SafeWork will lead the investigation with help from the police."
Ambulance media has been contacted for more information.
The fatal incident came during the aftermath of a truck crash that left a 33-year-old Victorian man dead after a southbound B-double crossed to the wrong side of the highway and crashed down an embankment.
"There is a family involved here who is going through an incredibly hard time," Superintendent Bob Noble said at the time.
