But this isn't anyone else.

This is a modern day legend of rugby league - the only man to play 400 NRL games, who has captained the Melbourne Storm to premierships, Queensland to State of Origin victories and Australia to international success - hacking his way around in the heat.

"Hahaha. Mate, the good shots have been few and far between. But it's been a fun day hanging around a few mates, and it's a great cause," Smith said.

"I was invited about six weeks ago and I jumped at the chance actually, to support a really good cause."

Smith is the biggest name to appear at the charity event run by Pillars of Strength which supports bereaved dads.

And he's in the middle of a big decision.

The 36-year-old's first visit to Wagga comes in an off-season of speculation about retirement although recent reports suggested he's committed to playing on.

During a break in his round, a good-natured Smith wasn't ready to announce whether that preliminary final loss to the Roosters had been his last game.

"I'm aahhh, my situation at the moment is 'enjoying my break'," Smith said, with a laugh.

"The first couple of weeks after the season finished, we were all very disappointed still with the way it ended in a prelim, particularly after a really successful (home-and-away) season where we finished minor premiers by three games.

"But we just didn't play well enough in the final series. If you don't play well enough you're not going to make the big one. So that was disappointing.

"I've taken a deep breath, and taken a step back and realised it's a game of footy. I've been very fortunate to play in some grand finals and win a few. And the sun still comes up every morning.

"I've spoken to (coach) Craig Bellamy a couple of times. I'm here with Ryan Hinchliffe who's part of our coaching staff. But I still haven't made up my mind.

"I'm three or four weeks into my break and the club haven't really put any pressure on me, either way.

"But at the moment I'm enjoying my break, and I'm enjoying my golf!"

Smith said there's a resolute hunger within the Storm to go back to the top.

"Absolutely. I'd be concerned if the players in our squad weren't disappointed and hungry to be better than what we were last year," Smith said.

"I think I'd be talking on behalf of all the players and the coaches about the disappointment of our finals campaign and not converting the opportunity that we gave ourselves through the regular season."

The man who played a record 42 Origin games for the Maroons (for a record 26 wins) has made the road trip from Melbourne to Brisbane a few times but never before via Wagga.

Smith said he was thoroughly enjoying the stay, and certainly knew a little of its rugby league history.

"I know Greg Brentnall from the Storm. I've known he and Wendy, Alex and Marc since I first joined the Storm so it's nice to know a few local faces up here. He's a foundation staff member at the Storm and a legend of the game, a local legend here," he said.

Smith played his round with Sydney Swan Harry Cunningham. Based in Melbourne for so long, he's taken a strong interest in the AFL and said he enjoyed swapping stories with the Wagga junior about his off-season and preparation for 2020.

"We're in the thick of it with AFL. You've got to grab a team and follow the game because you're surrounded by it," Smith said.

"We're right next door to Collingwood. We share AAMI Park with the (Melbourne) Demons, so we're close quarters with the teams and players and see how they operate. I'm a Hawks fan, so I'm hoping to see some success come back to the club."

A few holes ahead, Hawthorn's triple premiership player Luke Breust was completing his round and aware of the anticipation from a high-profile fan that they'll be back as a force next year.

Whether Breust can still watch Smith play for the Storm remains the vital question.
