Inspector Peter McLay said two officers on Saturday morning stopped a 17-year-old man in Pinaroo Drive, Glenfield Park.
"They asked him for his details, and he provided them with some false particulars," he said.
"When they were eventually able to confirm and identify he had two outstanding warrants, he tried to run from the police.
"He was tackled by a 40-year-old male officer, who unfortunately in doing so has dislocated his shoulder."
Inspector McLay said the officer's partner, a young female constable, managed to take hold of him until the 40-year-old could help her make the arrest, despite being in severe pain.

"He spent a number of hours in hospital," he said. "I would just really like to sing their praises.
"If someone wants to get away from the police, it is difficult to handle at the best of times, let alone when you have one bung shoulder."
Inspector McLay said the incident showed how dangerous police work could be, but also how hard the officers work.
"This gentleman is just hoping to get to the end of shift and next minute he finds himself in hospital," he said.
Inspector McLay said the 17-year-old was charged with multiple offences, including possessing a prohibited weapon which was knuckle dusters.
