It has been nearly two years since Collingullie Public School closed its doors and now, 21 months later, a playgroup has been formed to save the school from being sold.

Mother-of-two Sara Jones said she hopes through the community using the facilities that one day the school can open again.

"I started ringing around, mail dropping, putting notices up and started a Facebook page and there was a lot of interest, which was awesome," Mrs Jones said.

"I didn't realise how many mums were around having babies and had kids under the age of five.

"From now on we can have the school until mid-next year and then we'll see how we're going and if other people use it, we won't lose the school."

The playgroup received permission from the NSW Department of Education to use the school facilities and were meeting up in the meantime, while an agreement was put in place.

Mrs Jones said the playgroup could potentially bring more enrollments for the school.

Emma Guthrie said living in an area that isn't close to a school would present challenges for her growing family.

"We're half an hour from Lockhart, The Rock and Wagga so we're zoned to, as far as I'm aware, nothing," Ms Guthrie said.

"It's a challenge, particularly a half an hour drive to and from could get pretty old, pretty quickly so it would be nice if it can be opened again."

Ms Guthrie, mum to a six-month-old son, said the playgroup has also been an opportunity for her to meet others.

"It's great for me and it's so nice to meet other mums because I find it weird that Wagga doesn't have a mothers group," she said.
