The Blues showed their versatility in the process, completing a big run chase to down Wagga City in the grand final replay on Saturday before defending a modest score against Kooringal Colts on Sunday.

An unbeaten 54 from new recruit Alex Smeeth helped South Wagga to an eight-wicket win against the Cats on Saturday as the Blues reached 2-141 with 19 balls to spare.

On Sunday, they bowled out Kooringal for 92 after reaching 9-125 from their 20 overs.

Stand-in South Wagga captain Joel Robinson was pleased to see the Blues back up the hype with a solid opening weekend against competitive opponents.

"We just want to make sure we're playing good cricket through the year," Robinson said.

"I'm confident that if we're playing good cricket then the results will take care of themselves.

"But it was good to start the season with a couple of wins."

Wagga City started off strongly against South Wagga and were 0-56 off the first six overs before finishing at 1-140.

Jono Nicoll was unbeaten on 52, while Aaron Maxwell made 37 and Nick Cawley finished 41 not out.

Smeeth and Blake Harper (45 not out) led the run chase as South Wagga finished at 2-141.

"We've definitely got a lot of areas to improve on," Robinson said.

"We didn't bowl real well (on Saturday) and we had a couple of lapses with the bat.

"We pushed hard in the shorter format, Smeethy and Blake got in there and got through a little period and then batted well, which was good to watch as well."

Smeeth averaged 68 with the bat over the weekend and had combined figures of 2-32 from seven overs.

Robinson said Smeeth's opening performances showed what a valuable addition to the Blues he will be.

"Definitely, but there was never any doubts there," he said.

"His figures with the ball didn't really show it but you could definitely see that's where he's going to make a big difference as well."

Warren Clunes top scored with 28 on Sunday as South Wagga made 9-125 against Colts. Will Oliver took 3-21 off three overs for Kooringal.

Early and consistent breakthroughs were the key then for the Blues as they dismissed Colts for 92 in the final over.

Smeeth, Robinson, Lachie Skelly and Nathan Cooke all took two wickets apiece.

"Today we were probably 20 runs short of what we were aiming at, as a minimum," he said.

"We got off to a good start but then a couple of bad shots and we didn't finish the innings off the way we should have.

"I was pretty happy with the way we bowled and fielded. We did pretty well as a collective."

It was a disappointing weekend for Colts, who lost to Lake Albert by six runs on Saturday.
