And he did it without even dropping a game for the tournament.
Matthes claimed gold in the 50-54 years men's event at the the Australian Squash Masters Games on the Gold Coast last month.
He was pleased with his efforts with the perfect record in his three games.
"It was good," Matthes said.
"(I've been playing) for 40 odd years after playing as a junior on the coast.
"So it has been a while.
"I won teams last year in Hobart in division two but this is the first time I've done it as an individual."
It was part of a swag of medals for Wagga athletes.
While Matthes led the way, Shane Lamprey took bronze in the 60-64 women's while Cate Hardy made her return with a bronze in the 50-54 women's division.
It's unprecedented success for the club.
The courts at Charles Sturt University are now the only place in Wagga where squash can be played.
It's a far cry from the days of old, but the club is working hard to build the player base back up.
"Wagga Squash Club is moving forward in leaps and bounds," Hardy said.
"We've got four competitions with juniors and we're bucking the trend and increasing numbers."
Part of the plan is getting behind World Squash Day on Saturday.
The doors will be open to all looking to try out the sport for the first time or get back into the swing of things.
