The tests will help the ABS in running the 2021 Census, which collects information on every household in Australia to measure the population and improve distribution of government funds and services.
Some households will receive a letter in the mail from the ABS asking them to participate in the online test.
Alternatively, for a small number of households, an ABS field officer may visit to drop off a paper form, including in areas where completing online may be difficult.
Field officers can be identified by their ABS ID badges and will be carrying yellow Census satchels.
ABS Census division general manager Chris Libreri encouraged everyone asked to participate to complete their form.
"Because of the scale, the complexity and the significance (of the Census), it's important that we run tests to make sure our systems, processes and field services run smoothly, and that we ask the right questions in the right way," he said.
