Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor travelled to Wagga yesterday to tour the new facilities and said the upgrades would provide patients with improved care.
Mrs Taylor said the revamp of the hospital's high dependency and acute units was done in consultation with patients and their families with money from the state government's mental health infrastructure fund.
The improvements in the high dependency unit include a new theatre and sensory rooms and a larger courtyard for a basketball and handball court, waterfall and wall garden.
The acute unit upgrades include an additional living area and sunroom, increased space in the art and gym room and a basketball and handball court in the courtyard.
Carer Owen Lyons said the unit was "so much more refreshing" after the upgrades".
He said it was more personal for families to spend time together.
