About 12.30am on Wednesday, a northbound VW Jetta sedan was clocked doing 182km/h in the 110km/h zone on the Hume Highway at Woomargama.
According to police, while officers were preparing to chase that vehicle, a passing Toyota Coralla sedan was detected travelling at 167km/h.
Both cars were stopped near Holbrook. The drivers confirmed they were travelling together to a funeral in Sydney, police said.
The drivers both held Victorian P1 probationary driver's licences, which restrict the legal number of passengers in their vehicles to one.
Police allege there were three passengers in each of the cars.
Both drivers were charged with driving in a dangerous manner and will appear before Albury Local Court on October 22.
The driver of the Corolla was also fined $258 for not displaying P-plates and $572 for not complying with the passenger restriction condition of their licence.
As the driver of the Jetta was the owner, the vehicle was towed and impounded by police for three months.
Both had their NSW driving privileges suspended.
