Nigel Smedley from the Bureau of Meteorology's Wagga office said the region had been clipped by a cold front that was moving across the state.
By lunchtime, 0.4 millimetres of rain had fallen at the bureau's Wagga airport site, but Mr Smedley said there had been heavier showers elsewhere, particularly around Tumut and Gundagai.
Just before 1pm, the mercury hit a top of 15.9 degrees, slightly below the predicted maximum of 16.
The temperature fell to a low of 6.2 degrees just after midnight.
Tuesday's weather is expected to be marginally warmer, with an expected top of 17 degrees, although it will still be partly cloudy.
Those clouds are going to hang around until at least Friday, although there is little chance of further rain.
By Friday, the clouds are expected to have cleared, with mostly sunny skies and a top of 23 degrees likely.
