The Super 75 Fully Automatic Baler has been in action for about a week, pressing up to four tons of waste an hour.
Gregadoo Waste Management Facility manager Geoffrey Pym said the weight of one bale from the new machine equals to two of the old bales.
The powerful compacting machine is capable of producing bales weighing up to 650 kilograms, which is roughly the same as a fully-grown American Bison.
"The old compactor was all manual and now it's automatic, so it has definitely improved efficiency. It automatically ties the bales and pushes them out the back, which never use to happen before," Mr Pym said.
In other news:
Mr Pym said one truck load is now carrying about twice the amount with each trip to the recycling facility, which cuts down on transportation cost and carbon emissions.
He said the machine is compacting cardboard at the moment, but will eventually move onto other materials such as hard plastics.
Wagga City Council believes the new, more efficient compactor will increase the centre's capacity to meet rising demand.
