The spate is in line with the latest research from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, which showed an increase in the category from 494 to 569 in the 12 months to June 2019.

Acting Inspector Maggie Deall said Glenfield Park, Mount Austin, Tolland and Ashmont saw a spate of thefts from vehicles.

"We have got police out there looking for CCTV and talking to residents," she said.

"We are asking anyone who has CCTV, can you please check it. If you do something, either contact us, we are happy to come pick it up or bring it to the police station."

Inspector Deall said a significant portion of the targeted cars had been left unlocked.

"Please lock your motor vehicles, please do not leave valuables in sight," she said.

"It is a sad fact in today's society that we are getting a lot of theft, and you have to do certain things to protect yourself."

Inspector Deall said it would appear that the same group of people committed the thefts, but police are still investigating all avenues.

She added spare change was the most common item stolen, but even last week a company had some equipment taken.

"[There] was damage to a lot of cars and damage to ignition barrels, which indicates to use the intent was to steal the actual motor vehicle," Inspector Deall said.

"We are very concerned, and we are meeting at the moment to discuss some ideas about how best to attack the problem proactively.

"We will have police out on foot and some strategies in the coming weeks to combat it."
