Each given a word of considerable length and difficulty to spell.

By the end of the two hours, just one had successfully spelt all the words given to them.

South Wagga Public School's Ryan Tapfield was crowned the champion of the junior years, while Anneliese Rothe from Young Public School took the regional title in the seniors.

The seniors presented a striking challenge, going through 12 words of both seen and unseen words.

This year was the first time the regional finals had been held at Turvey Park Public School, with students travelling from as far as Jugiong to be there for the day.

Turvey Park principal Anna Roberts saw it as an opportunity to present the best side of the city's primary educational institutions.

"The kids have been so excited about it being here. The students who have made it to the regional level have already won against their classroom peers and their year groups. The two students from each school are very much at the top," she said.

A nerve-wracking experience to stand up in front of the school, parents and adjudicators, it was taken in stride at least by one student.

Andre Wrenford from year five at Lake Albert Public School returned to the regional finals this year, after making it to the state finals at the Opera House last year.
