Coming into his second grand final as Bulls captain-coach, McCarthy is out to finish his two-year stint with a victory.
They fell short last year but the 31-year-old sees grand final success as an ideal way to hand over the coaching reins.
"It was tough last year losing one," McCarthy said.
"It is something I would like to tick off
"Hopefully it all wasn't for nothing and I can get a premiership."
Adding to his desire to bring up another premiership with the Bulls is the fact he missed out on their last success in 2017.
A shoulder problem forced him to the sidelines as they downed Gundagai for a second year running before the Tigers turned the tables last year.
"It's been three years since I've won one and I would love another especially with all the hard work you put in as coach and the extra hours you put in away from your family," McCarthy said.
"It would be something good to take home and cherish."
Southcity are taking on a Tumut outfit who have conceded the least amount of points throughout the season.
McCarthy is out to beat the Blues at their own game.
"Defence wins the big games," he said. "We have got to be good, especially through the middle.
"Last year it was only 13-6, so it was low scoring but 13 points was too much to let in to win the game so we've got to be a lot better in defence and the least amount of points we can hold them to the better."
Defence around the ruck has been a big focus, looking to limit the influence of the likes of Lachlan Bristow.
"They have really crafty dummy halves, especially when their forwards get a roll on so we have to be really good around the marker and A defender area," McCarthy said.
"If we can stem the flow of their roll on then we should be right."
The Bulls have made plenty of changes to their line up but McCarthy is pleased with how the teams comes into the grand final.
"We really enjoyed that week off, rested up and recovered a bit so we are rip roaring and ready to go," he said.
"Last week was just a recovery week to get ourselves right and gave us an opportunity to work on a couple of things we need to be good at not worrying about who the opponent was.
"Now that has happened we've ramped it up this week."
