Australia's economy is expected to dip to its lowest rate of expansion in 19 years.

Economists' expectations for the quarterly national accounts on Wednesday range from the slowest economic growth since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis to the weakest pace since the introduction of the GST in 2000.

This would be in sharp contrast to the upbeat appraisal of the economy given in the April 2 budget.

Economists' forecasts centre on a 0.5 per cent rise in gross domestic product for the June quarter, which would drag the annual rate down to just 1.4 per cent from 1.8 per cent in the year ended March.

This would be around half the pace of what is considered as Australia's long-term trend rate at 2.75 per cent.

Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney his government was "very aware" of the challenges facing the economy.

That was why it put in place a $100 billion infrastructure plan and personal income tax cuts, as well as budgeting for more skills and training funding, and legislating trade deals.

"All of this was part of this year's budget in the full knowledge that we would be facing a very difficult quarter," Mr Morrison said.

"I suspect the June quarter results will be soft, but what matters is the plan that is already in place."

He said the government would not be responding with "knee-jerk reactions" to economic circumstances.

CommSec senior economic Ryan Felsman said the economy remained sluggish with tepid business and consumer confidence.

"Clearly more policy work needs to be done to boost growth," he said.

Shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers said after six years in government it was not good enough for Mr Morrison to dismiss the domestic economy's long-standing home-grown weaknesses as "a difficult quarter".

"On his watch, Australia has the slowest growth in a decade, stagnant wages, productivity in decline, record household debt, high underemployment, and declining living standards and all he's promising is more of the same," Mr Chalmers told AAP.

"The government must bring forward a budget update to properly outline an economic program that supports the floundering economy and better safeguards it from global risks."

While financial markets are not expecting the Reserve Bank to cut the cash rate again when its board meets on Tuesday, a weak growth result will add to expectations of a further reduction later this year.

The official cash rate was cut to a record low one per cent in July.
