Ken Warby still holds the world record of 511.11km/h, which he set in the 1970s on the same dam in NSW's Snowy Mountains using a boat he built in his own backyard.
Like his father, Dave built his own boat - the Spirit of Australia II - and is one of many to attempt the feat with many losing their lives in the process.
Dave has worked on conquering the record to keep it in the family name for years now, and this weekend's trial attempts will see him one step closer to success with the actual record attempt planned for late this year or early 2020.
In other news:
The RMS declared an exclusion zone for the weekend with no vessel movements allowed on the dam until further notice.
This first trial run of many over the weekend will take place on Friday, August 30 at 9:00am following a range of thorough safety checks.
