And, perhaps more importantly, how does our city reach this ambitious target?
In the coming weeks, The Daily Advertiser will be exploring these two burning questions through a special series in the lead up to the Wagga 100,000 public forum on September 27.
Hosted by Committee 4 Wagga, in conjunction with the Housing Industry Association and Wagga City Council, the forum will feature demographic commentator Bernard Salt, as well as experts across other relevant fields.
Last year, a state government report titled 'A 20-Year Economic Vision for Regional NSW' identified Wagga and its immediate surrounds as an area of "significant growth" under a 20-year plan for regional NSW.
But the rate of growth to reach 100,000 people won't just happen automatically.
At its current rate, Wagga is forecast to reach only about 80,000 by 2038. In fact, the city's growth rate must essentially double if it is to hit 100,000 people.
How we stimulate population growth and create the estimated 14,000 new jobs necessary to sustain a city of 100,000 is something that needs to be carefully planned.
Then there is the challenge of providing the infrastructure, electricity, water, healthcare, housing, education and entertainment a city of that size needs.
It is a prospect equal parts exciting and daunting, and we at The DA are looking forward to exploring the possibilities in the coming weeks.
All the best for the week ahead, Ross.
