Gestier's three-year tenure as Collingullie-GP coach will come to a close on Saturday when the Demons face Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes at Mangoplah Sportsground.
It has been a disappointing season at Crossroads Oval as the reigning premiers have slumped to eight consecutive losses and will miss finals for the first time in 19 years.
Gestier conceded the year has been much harder than he ever comprehended.
"Look, it obviously hasn't gone to plan," Gestier said.
"To be honest, I'm pretty disappointed. The blame doesn't lie with one individual but as a collective I thought we had a lot more to offer."
Gestier admits he he has struggled in the coaching role this year.
"As coach you put your hand up and take responsibility for the side and whether you like it or not the acid goes on myself," he said.
"What's happened doesn't sit well with me. It's been hard. Obviously there is an expectation that we should be making finals as a really proud club and individually I hate losing so I've really struggled with it. In the past you win games of footy and you do take it for granted and anyone that says they don't is lying to you.
"From a football perspective, I just haven't been able to put my finger on it. I've really struggled and it's been bloody tough. Obviously winning it last year, it gets forgotten about pretty quickly. It happens and you move on."
Gestier has not made up his mind on what next year holds for him but enjoying his football will be his number one priority.
"I definitely haven't made a decision on my future. The biggest thing for me, I've got to get back to loving footy again," he said.
"Even last year when we won the flag, of course you enjoy it but there were a lot of tough times for myself behind closed doors, where I had the support of my family and the club. Everyone sees from the outside where things are going great but that wasn't really how it was at all and for me it was more a relief."
Gestier will miss the final game of the year with his reoccurring hamstring injury keeping him on the sidelines for another week.
He simply wants the Demons to go out and enjoy themselves and hopes that can get them back on the winner's list.
"You always hold hope, I've held hope for the second half of the year," he said.
"We're a chance and you never know, they might be a bit complacent but I highly doubt that. We've just got to give it one last crack.
The biggest thing is that we've just got to try and enjoy it for the last time. Have a bit of fun and hopefully kick a winning score."
