Riverina Police Inspector Peter McLay said a 22-year-old male driver was pulled over by police, shortly after doing a burnout in Morrow Street, opposite the council chambers about 11pm on Saturday night.
"Police were patrolling Baylis street at the time and noticed a large number of people congregated at the intersection of Morrow and Baylis streets," he said.
"As they approached they heard and smelt the large screeching of tires and saw a large bloom of smoke from the rear of the vehicle. It was pretty obvious what the male had been doing".
Inspector McLay said the driver's behaviour was dangerous and irresponsible with many pedestrians - some of which were effected by alcohol - nearby.
In other news:
"It's just a stupid practice that we do not encourage," he said.
The police issued the driver with two infringement notices for not carrying his license and operating a vehicle so the wheels lost traction.
Inspector McLay said the driver will pay a fine totaling $750 for the dangerous practice.
