Operation Chrome started in the early hours of Friday morning and will continue through to Sunday night.
Inspector Peter McLay said motorists can expect a higher presence of Highway Patrol and general police officers on the road, conducting random breath tests, enforcing speed limits and targeting mobile phone use.
Although the local road toll is not up on last year, Inspector McLay said "one person killed on Riverina roads is one too many".
"It is about reducing road fatalities and keeping people safe on our rural roads," he said.
