Dumbrell returned to the Wagga club this season after linking in Group 20 club Yanco-Wamoon in 2015.
He's been a standout on the field however the 28-year-old is unsure of where he'll be living next year and didn't want to leave the club in the lurch.
"I'm in a bit of uncertainly at the moment so I can't say yes if I don't know if I'm definitely going to be here next year," Dumbrell said.
"If we're within an hour of the place I'll definitely come over and do it.
"I'm not going to leave the club, and won't go to any other club, but I didn't want to commit to it when I have no idea of where we are going to go."
Dumbrell hasn't ruled out a second year at the helm if he remains in the region.
However the crafty hooker has enjoyed his time back at the club.
Even if the season hasn't worked out quite as planned after a couple of significant injuries to key players.
"It's good to be back in Group Nine footy, all the guys have been fairly committed, everyone has good hopes of progressing further, in terms of winning more games and one day competing for the top prize, so it has been a worthwhile year," Dumbrell said.
"I know most clubs say we've got this many injuries but most of our injuries were to guys we were looking to really make an impact for us.
"It's the heart and soul of the club in Lachy Cuell, Swifty (Cameron Andrews) who was our fullback and member of our spine and Troy Dumbrell who was a key member of our forward pack.
"We lost guaranteed first graders who would have played all 18 games."
Kangaroos president Terry Cronin confirmed they were ideally looking a half to be their on-field leader in 2020.
Zac Graham and Trae O'Neill stepped into the playmaking roles this season, but the Wagga side is looking for more depth.
"We're looking for a creative half of some description," Cronin said.
"The boys did well filling in this year but we always knew there was going to be a gap there in the halves.
"They did as good a job as they could."
At this stage, Cronin hadn't been told of any impending departures from the players ranks.
Kangaroos are looking to finish on a high when they tackle Albury at Equex Centre on Saturday.
The sixth placed team has lost to finals bound Southcity and Tumut in the last fortnight but have a win over Gundagai to their credit this season.
