With more than 80,000 students and public passengers each month, it's no wonder Busabout has a keen interest in safety for not only passengers but also staff, other road users and pedestrians.
The service has nine regular route services and 110 school routes covering more than 28,000 kilometres each week from the Charles Sturt University in the north, Tarcutta to the east and Yerong Creek in the south.
Depot manager Shaun Williams said Busabout has a continuing partnership with the NRMA, NSW Police and local schools for the annual "On the Bus" school bus safety program.
The program has been in place for more than 10 years.
"It is a vital safety initiative, educating children who are just starting school, about waiting for, travelling on, and alighting buses," Shaun said.
"A collaboration with Wagga Wagga City Council, Roads and Maritime Services and Transport for NSW enables us to provide keep safe bus transport of students, safety around schools, and safe locations for bus stops."
Passengers safety and comfort is important both on and off the bus, which is why all new Busabout buses include bus fire suppression and tyre pressure monitoring systems. In addition, all buses are fitted with air conditioning, and seat belts are now mandatory in rural and regional buses.
Soon, the entire fleet will be upgraded to RMS Technical Specification 150.
"This includes larger, clearer signage and brighter warning lights for greater visibility for motorists," Shaun said.
As well as concentrating on the safety of passengers and other road users Busabout also focuses on the community.
"We provide public transport solutions and charter services for the city and surrounding areas with more than 80 per cent of timetabled regular-route services are wheelchair accessible," Shaun said.
"We also donate the use of buses for the annual Christmas Lights Bus tour, provide local businesses with a mobile advertising platforms for local businesses and offer employment in various roles requiring different skills and abilities."
The Busabout team is made up of 65 staff across two locations - Wagga and Harden.
