The sustainable gardening theme aims to educate young children about practical ways to improve their own health while helping the environment.

As part of the initiative, students have grown their own food in their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation garden. They have also cooked their produces in the school kitchen.

Among the school gardeners is Riley Davoren, 11, who said he likes being out growing food because "not many people do that now".

"We never ever waste any food," he said.

Fellow student Anastasia McFarlane, 12, said "it's great that we've been able to speak about the garden and what we love about it".

"I love all the produce that we get to grow," Anastasia said.

Similarly, Abbi Jackson said the chance to be outdoors was "great".

"Because I love the garden," the 12-year-old said.

During August, Australia Post is promoting its 'In the Garden Stamps', with their various artworks and designs, to encourage children to start learning about gardening.

Cathy Bowditch, senior postal serving officer at Wagga Australia Post, said this is the first time is gardening themed.

"We're trying to get the children into the gardens and do some more growing and learn how to save water," Ms Bowditch said.

"Recycling is another part as well."

Yesterday, Ms Bowditch brought along some enlarged stamps for the students at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
