Bernie Hinchcliffe has been a school crossing supervisor, employed by NSW Roads and Maritime Service, for four years and said the highlight every morning is seeing the children smile.
"I've been at this particular crossing permanently for about 18 months and I love helping the children," Mr Hinchcliffe said.
"Working with children is absolutely beautiful ... we have little chats, say good morning and good afternoon and I tell them to enjoy their day."
The 71-year-old said he missed out on a lollipop person when he was younger as he travelled by bus to school.
"I love it and it's something I enjoy doing, coming here and helping the children," Mr Hinchcliffe said.
"I haven't come across any near misses as I think a lot of people respect me when I walk out onto the road to get the children across safely.
"It's good because when you're on a crossing permanently, you see the kids growing up and moving onto different schools and transitioning from a young child to a teenager and that's a really good part."
Mr Hinchcliffe said he enjoys being the first point of encouragement at school for children.
"You hear a lot of stories from kids ... and some are having rough times so it's nice to see them smile and say good morning, because I don't think a lot of children get that in the morning," he said.
"I'm 71 years old now, but I'll keep doing it for as long as I can."
Mr Hinchliffe marks the third local lollipop person to be featured by The Daily Advertiser and to acknowledge their important role within the community.
He is among 1200 part-time and casual school crossing supervisors at about 800 crossing around the state.
August marks rural road safety month and school crossing supervisors play an important role in keeping children safe alongside other measures such as school zone flashing lights and pedestrian safety infrastructure.
