The rethink on protecting the Hume Highway landmark at Gundagai follows a Wagga man being charged by police over the toppling of the statue on Saturday afternoon.
The man, 28, handed himself into Wagga police on Monday and was charged with one count of destroying or damaging property and bailed to face court on September 11.
Gundagai mayor Abb McAlister said security would be "beefed up" at the statue with CCTV likely to be installed and fencing, to be opened at certain times, under consideration.
"We'll secure the dog more with bolts on the side and underneath straight into the plinth," he said.
"It was sitting there with an epoxy underneath."
Country singer Andrew Swift has launched a mycause crowdfunding page for the dog, which needs its right ear re-attached.
"Whether the money goes towards repairs or CCTV that's okay, I just thought if I could do a bit to help, it would be good," he said.
Swift posts a photo online every time he passes the dog and posed with it while returning to Melbourne with Golden Guitars he won at the Tamworth country music fest in January.
