"He has got the charisma to do it. He has got a great sense of humour," Mr Dutton told Nine's Today Show on Friday.

"I think he is obviously an incredibly intelligent guy. You could describe him as a little quirky on occasions."

Labor Leader Anthony Albanese said the Morrison government could learn a thing or two from Mr Johnson's climate change policies.

"The interesting thing is part of his campaign for the leadership of the Conservative Party was a zero emissions by 2050," Mr Albanese said.

"(Premier) Gladys Berejiklian here in NSW has exactly the same policy. The (federal) government has no policy to drive down emissions and they are going up."

Former foreign minister Julie Bishop earlier said Australia could look forward to a "significant reinvigoration" in its relations with the UK under Mr Johnson's leadership.

Ms Bishop first met the new British prime minister in 2012 when he was London mayor and worked alongside him when he was foreign secretary between 2016 and 2018.

She said he combined his charm and wit with "a mastery of many subjects" including UK-Australian relations.

"He has already stated his support for a free-trade agreement, enhanced travel arrangements and closer engagement through our officials and business community," Ms Bishop wrote in a News Corp article.

"I expect he will continue his interest in strengthening the role of the Commonwealth as a network of nations committed to democratic ideals, freedom and the rule of law.

"This will align closely with Australia's interests, particularly as many of the Pacific Island nations in our region are also members of the Commonwealth."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke with Mr Johnson on Wednesday night and looked forward to meeting with him in France during the G7 summit next month.

"We are both looking forward to that opportunity (and) moving very quickly... to an agreement between the United Kingdom and Australia on trade," he told reporters.

Mr Johnson represented a "new opportunity" to resolve the Brexit issue, which was important not only for the UK but the broader global economy, Mr Morrison said.
