Wagga Police were called to unit blocks in Bruce Street about 8.30 am where a 14-year-old girl was approached by a man aged between 25 to 35 years old.
Inspector Adrian Telfer spoke to media this morning and said approaching any young person is inappropriate, but would not identify what the conversation was about.
"He had a conversation with the 14-year-old girl there and we're looking to identify that male and hopefully speak with him to gather exactly what that conversation was about," Inspector Telfer said.
"We believe it was inappropriate and we believe approaching any young person is inappropriate.
"There's no issue of concern for the community at this stage, but we'd just like to speak to this individual and he may have a reason behind his conversations, so the most important thing for us is to speak to this individual."
The man is believed to be about six foot tall, with a thin build, wearing blue jeans and possibly of African appearance.
Inspector Telfer said there was no other reported incidents in that area yesterday.
"We don't believe he was trying to lure her anywhere, it's just the conversations were inappropriate, particularly for a 14-year-old girl so we're just appealing for that individual to come forward," Inspector Telfer said.
"That person was last seen hanging around Bruce Street a short time later and once the police arrived, he was gone.
