Two men have been charged after the vehicle stop along the southbound lanes of the Hume Highway led to the illicit discovery, police said.

The car was stopped around 2.30pm and after speaking with the two men inside - a 31-year-old driver and his 33-year-old passenger - Albury Highway Patrol officers began a search of the Subaru.

That search, police say, uncovered more than two kilograms of heroin stashed in six packages and concealed in a secret compartment in the boot of the sedan. They also confiscated a number of mobile phone and a range of other items from the car. All have been marked for forensic analysis.

The 2.2 kilograms of drugs seized has an estimated street value of more than $1.1 million.

Both men were arrested and taken to Albury police station, where they were charged with supplying a prohibited drug (large commercial quantity) and possessing a prohibited drug.

They will face Albury Local Court on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, investigations by police are continuing.

Murray River Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Winston Woodward, said yesterday's seizure and arrests was a great result by the officers involved.

"Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers are not only trained to reduce road trauma but are also trained in techniques that can lead to the detection of drugs and other contraband," Det Insp Woodward said.

"The effects of heroin and all illicit drugs have devastating impacts on regional communities and this seizure means less drugs on our streets.

"I continue to appeal to all members of our community to provide information to police in relation to suspected drug suppliers - your information will be treated in confidence and acted upon," Det Insp Woodward said
